Short answerPM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana pays Telangana homeowners ₹30,000 for a 1 kW rooftop system, ₹60,000 for 2 kW and ₹78,000 for 3 kW or more, by direct bank transfer after the system is commissioned. You need to own the house, have a domestic electricity connection, and use made-in-India (DCR) panels installed by a registered vendor. The scheme period runs until 31 March 2027.
What the scheme is
Launched in February 2024 with an outlay of ₹75,021 crore, PM Surya Ghar aims to put rooftop solar on one crore homes. It replaces older state-level rooftop subsidies with a single national process run through the portal at pmsuryaghar.gov.in. The government’s promise of “up to 300 free units” refers to what a typical 3 kW system can generate; your actual saving depends on how much you use.
How much subsidy you get
| System size | Central subsidy | Typical monthly generation in Telangana |
|---|---|---|
| 1 kW | ₹30,000 | 120–135 units |
| 2 kW | ₹60,000 | 240–270 units |
| 3 kW and above | ₹78,000 (maximum) | 360–420 units for 3 kW |
| Housing societies (common areas) | ₹18,000 per kW, up to 500 kW | Depends on size |
The formula is ₹30,000 per kW for the first 2 kW plus ₹18,000 for the third kW. Anything above 3 kW gets no extra subsidy, though it still saves money.

Low-interest loans
Public sector banks offer collateral-free rooftop solar loans under the scheme. For systems up to 3 kW, rates have been around 7% per year, linked to the repo rate. Compare the EMI with your saving using our EMI calculator.
Common mistakes that delay the subsidy
- Name on the electricity bill does not match the bank account holder.
- Non-DCR panels installed by an unregistered installer.
- Sanctioned load lower than the solar capacity, which needs a load enhancement first.
- Photos and serial numbers missing from the installation upload.
Frequently asked questions
Is the PM Surya Ghar subsidy available in Telangana?
Yes. It is a central scheme open in every state. In Telangana, applications are verified by TGSPDCL (southern districts including Hyderabad) or TGNPDCL (northern districts including Warangal, Karimnagar and Khammam).
Can I get the subsidy for a 5 kW or 10 kW system?
Yes, but the subsidy is capped at ₹78,000, the amount for 3 kW. Capacity above 3 kW is at your own cost.
Do I need to pay the full amount first?
Usually yes: you pay the vendor, the system is installed and inspected, and the subsidy comes to your bank account afterwards. Concessional bank loans can cover most of the upfront amount.
Does a hybrid system with batteries qualify?
Yes. The subsidy is calculated on the solar panel capacity. Batteries are not subsidised.
