Short answerPM KUSUM (Pradhan Mantri Kisan Urja Suraksha evam Utthaan Mahabhiyan) helps farmers install solar pumps. Under Component B, standalone solar pumps up to 7.5 HP get 30% central support and up to 30% from the state, so the farmer pays about 40%. Whether applications are open in Telangana at any time depends on state allocations, so check current status before you plan around it.
The three parts of PM KUSUM
- Component A: small solar power plants (up to 2 MW) on barren or fallow farmland, selling power to the DISCOM.
- Component B: standalone, off-grid solar pumps replacing diesel pumps. This is the one most farmers mean.
- Component C: solarising existing grid-connected pumps, either individually or at the feeder level.
Subsidy structure for Component B
| Share | Who pays |
|---|---|
| 30% | Central government |
| Up to 30% | State government (where the state participates) |
| About 40% | Farmer, of which a part can be a bank loan |
Rules differ for some categories and states, and the benchmark cost per HP is set nationally. Treat these as guide figures.
Eligibility

- Pump capacity matched to your water source and landholding.
Documents
- Aadhaar and land records (pattadar passbook)
- Bank passbook
- Details of the water source
- Passport-size photo and mobile number
Without KUSUM: does a solar pump still pay?
Usually yes. A 5 HP diesel pump running six hours a day for 200 days burns around 1,600 litres of diesel a year. At current prices that is ₹1.5 lakh or more, before repairs. Try the numbers for your farm in the solar pump calculator.
How we help
We size the pump from your borewell depth and yield, check whether KUSUM sanctions are available in your district, help with the paperwork if they are, and install with theft-resistant mounting. See our solar pump options.
Frequently asked questions
How much do farmers pay under PM KUSUM?
Under Component B, the central government gives 30% of the benchmark cost, the state can give 30%, and the farmer pays the remaining 40%. Banks can lend part of the farmer’s share.
Is PM KUSUM open in Telangana right now?
Availability depends on the state’s current sanctions and targets, which change. We check the latest position for your district before you pay anything.
Can I get a solar pump without PM KUSUM?
Yes. Many farmers buy outright because diesel savings alone pay back the cost in a few years. Our pump calculator shows the payback with and without subsidy.
